Upcoming Speakers and Events

This week our speaker will be Mary Beth Seiser our current District Governor.

There is no meeting on Labor Day, September 1st and our next meeting is September 8th. Our speaker will be Steve Baas Vice President, MMAC. Steve spoke with us last year regarding MMAC’s initiatives on jobs and other governmental issues.

Nathan Smallwood

Last week our speaker was Nathan Smallwood of the Schlitz Audubon in Bayside. Nathan is currently a member of the Downtown Rotary Club. Nathan spoke about their history and the new facilities at the Center. He also addressed questions regarding membership and programing. The club was impressed by the number school children who visit the center each year. He stated that they have a number of challenges they are facing in the near future. They include replacing ash trees as they become infected with the Ash Bore and maintaining the property in its natural habitat.

Membership Month

August is Rotary membership month. During Membership Month, we encourage all members to celebrate their clubs, their members, and the good work they do in their communities. There are many ways for our club to get involved during Membership Month:

  • At club meetings, view RI President Gary Huang’s Membership Video Message to remind members how important membership is to maintaining a strong and active club.
  • Connect with Rotary’s Facebook page and change your Facebook and Twitter profile pictures to the I’m a Proud Member graphic to show off your membership to friends, family members, and colleagues in your social networks.
  • Post photos of your club doing good in your community to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using the hashtag #WeAreRotary.
  • Register for the August 13th webinar Membership: It’s Now or Never, the first of our Membership Matters Webinar series.

History Tidbits

We are continuing to feature “History Tidbits” as we approach our sixty year anniversary in March of 2015. We will be discussing the formation of a 60th Anniversary Committee at our board meeting. John German has agreed to be our master of ceremonies for this event. We need volunteers to assist with the selecting of the venue and the planning of the anniversary party.

During the 1960 Rotary year, Tom Simota was the club president. The club was visited by Laverne Schatzel, the District Governor from the Germantown Club. Again the club outgrew its meeting place and in December of 1960, the club moved to Poppy’s located in the Bay Shore Shopping Center.

This year’s Lobsterfest is on September 13th at Shelly’s in Mequon. Sponsorships are available any level. Through our annual Lobsterfest, our club and the Mequon Thiensville club raise the funds we need to support all our volunteer community service projects, humanitarian services and our annual Cause to Fund.  Tickets are available through Cary Silverstein and Thomas McCutcheon is handling the auction items.

Rotary Youth Exchange

Do you and your family have room in your heart and space in your house for an Exchange Student? Three Host families are needed to sign up NOW, each to welcome and house Rotary’s incoming exchange student arriving from Thailand in August 2014.    Each Host Family will serve for only about four months between August 2014 and July 2015. If you are interested, please contact Terry Machut.
