Upcoming Speakers and Events

This week we have a board meeting at 11:00 AM at the Sheraton Four Points. All members are invited to attend. There will be a business meeting after the board meeting.

The following week our speaker will be G.B. Jones of the FBI Milwaukee Office.

Future Speakers Needed

Please mail or call Cary Silverstein with suggestions for future speakers for the 2015 Rotary Year. We have two openings in Dec 2014 and are now booking January and February 2015.

Alex Stewart / Marquette University

At Marquette Alex is a Professor of Management and holds the Coleman Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurship. Professor Stewart spoke on the need to build a strong entrepreneurial spirit in the inner city and to build the educational foundation and skill sets of its population. Professor Stewart reviewed with the club his planning matrix that is used in his class on entrepreneurship. His students are encouraged to first search within themselves as to what they want to achieve and understand how they can apply that motivation to their business plan.

Professor Stewart also stressed the importance of the students understanding their market and their customers. He also stated that students many times overvalue their business and the potential income it will generate. Professor Stewart is working to develop an advisory group that would include other departments within Marquette University.

Our guests this week were Bob Brown, a potential member and guest of Susie and Cary Silverstein. Other guests were Karen White, our District Governor Elect for 2015-2015, Dan Gannon, visiting Rotarian from MT Rotary and David Smulyan a guest of Vance Dalzin.

History Tidbits

We are continuing to feature “History Tidbits” as we approach our sixty year anniversary in March of 2015. We will be discussing the formation of a 60th Anniversary Committee at our board meeting. John German has agreed to be our master of ceremonies for this event and has a number of the club’s past presidents joining the committee. We need additional volunteers to assist with the selection of the venue and the planning of the anniversary party. I met with John this week and we discussed potential venues and are considering inviting Kathy Mykleby from Channel 12 to be our honorary mistress of ceremonies. Channel 12 is also celebrating their 60th anniversary.

The club president was John Bakes. The president elect John Rowe was joined by  Bob Vogel in representing the club at International Convention in Nice, France in June. The club membership was 63.

Pancake Breakfast

Brian Guerin is already planning the annual Pancake Breakfast and will be asking for volunteers to assist in serving the food, maintaining the tables, getting sponsors and selling tickets. Before you know it we will be ringing bells at Bay Shore and serving pancakes at the Brown Deer field house.

The wrap-up meeting for Lobsterfest was held this past week and Deb Kerr will be reporting the final numbers to the club at the business meeting.
